Puerto Limón
Puerto Limón was once a vibrant shipping port for the banana trade. Abandoned in favor of the Port of Moin to the north, the city was devastated by an earthquake in 1991 and has yet to really recover. The rough appearance suggests it is unsafe, but Costa Ricans are known for their hospitality and friendliness. But like any
big city, it is wise to remain aware.
Puerto Limón is tropical and hot all year. Temperatures are consistently in the 80-s and 90s, and the rainiest months are November through January where rainfall can average as much as 15 inches per month.
Playa Bonita Beach is only 4 kilometers from downtown Puerto Limón. It is a short taxi ride, but make sure you have a ride back. There is a restaurant and bar, a small shopping area. There is also a rideable left break for surfers.
