MANZANILLO
Manzanillo (man-za-NEE-oh),about 8 miles southeast of Puerto Viejo on the Southern Caribbean Coast, is a 250-year-old fishing town. The little town has been slow to develop with electricity first arriving in the ’80s, and phone service in 2000. Perhaps that’s why Manzanillo’s claims to fame are Nature and Seafood.
The Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge was founded in 1985, preserving both the town and its treasures. With the support of like-minded locals, has helped slow land development in the area through their involvement creating protective regulations on new projects.
Manzanillo is distinctly Caribbean in style and attitude, with brightly painted stilt homes, hot stoves of simmering coconut-infused foods, and roads carry names such as “Mista Cracker Jack Street.” The town’s friendly residents speak both Spanish and Patois English.
